First Time a Marylander Wins 2006 National Jolly K. Award

Mother of 5 Turns Around Life and is Recognized as a Parent Leader in Community

Baltimore, MD, February 6, 2006 - Toni "Brooke" Fitzgerald has been selected as the recipient of the National 2006 Jolly K. Award.  This award, given by Parents Anonymous Inc., recognizes a Parent Leader who exemplifies courage, tenacity and strong leadership at home and in the communities in which they live. This is the first time a Maryland parent has received this honor.

The Family Tree, Inc. a leading child abuse prevention organization and state's chapter of Parents Anonymous Inc., runs the program for Maryland's parents.  Fitzgerald quickly developed leadership skills and was nominated by her peers, volunteers and staff to accept the state's Jolly K. Award and moved on to be selected as the national award recipient.  Founded in 1969 by parent Jolly K., Parent Anonymous® is a national program dedicated to strengthening families through strategies that promote mutual support and parent leadership.

"I found The Family Tree when I was faced with the overwhelming task of raising my five kids on my own. The Parents Anonymous program helped me turn my life around.  It was a time to share and receive sound advice on raising my children," explained Ms. Fitzgerald. "Now I am not afraid to be a single mom.  It gave me hope that I can make it."  Ms. Fitzgerald was so moved by the experience and changes in her family that she wanted to educate others on this important program.  "We are proud of what Ms. Fitzgerald has accomplished for her family and the countless others she has touched through her leadership," said Patricia K. Cronin, The Family Tree's Executive Director.
