Speakers & Panelist Bios

We thank all our speakers and panelists for their support of this effort to eradicate child abuse and neglect in Maryland.


John Meyerhoff, M.D. is a Clinical Scholar of Rheumatology at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and a lifelong champion of child abuse prevention.  He has served on the board of The Family Tree since before its merger of Parent's Anonymous and the Child Abuse Prevention Center in 1997.


R
ichard Krugman, M.D., Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Pediatrics Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  Dr. Krugman is also a reknowned advocate for child abuse prevention, and headed the U.S. Advisory Board for Child Abuse and Neglect from 1988-1991 - his son, Scott Krugman, M.D. currently serves on The Family Tree Board of Directors.


Scott Krugman, M.D. is Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, MD and a member of the Board of Directors of The Family Tree. Scott is also the Chairman of the Maryland Academy of Pediatrics Child Maltreatment Committee, and has served on both the Maryland and Baltimore County Child Fatality Review Teams.

 

Panelists included:

Dr. Richard P. Barth,
Professor and Dean, School of Social Work, University of Maryland. He has directed more than 40 studies on child welfare and child wellbeing, and served as Co-Principal Investigator of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Wellbeing, the first national study of child welfare services in the U.S.

The Honorable Susan H. Hazlett, Associate Judge, District Court of Maryland, District 9 Harford County.  Judge Hazlett was a former Assistant State's Attorney in Baltimore county from 1988-2008, serving in the child abuse and sex offense division from 1994-1997.  She currently sits on the Maryland State Council on Child Abuse and Neglect and the Child Protection Panel, Baltimore County.

Matthew Joseph, Executive Director, Advocates for Children and Youth, a non-profit in Maryland dedicated to advocating on behalf of the needs of children and families in the community, the media and the public policy arena.

Ernie Reitz, Assistant State's Attorney, Baltimore City Office of the State's Attorney.  Mr. Reitz is a seasoned prosecutor who fights for abused children every day in the courts.

Allen Walker, M.D. is a leader in Baltimore's fight against child abuse.  He is the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and has led their Child Protection Team for over 10 years.
